The Mystery of the Cross          How, then, do we bridge the gap? Many early Christian writings understand the cross in terms of expansion into the cosmos: St. Irenaeus interpreted ‘breadth and length and height and depth’ found in Paul’s letter to the Ephesians (3, 18 -19) as the Cross extending through the heavens and the earth and the four cardinal points.
